Total hip and knee replacements have become common. A recent study suggests that the length of hospital stay after either can be reduced through physical therapy. As part of the program, physical therapy begins in the recovery room on the day of surgery, rather than the day after surgery.

The study in the Bulletin of the Hospital for Joint Disease, found that getting patients moving as early as the day of surgery after joint replacement is safe. And it reduces the overall length of the hospital stay for over 70% of patients."
