• Ask a PT: Multiple Sclerosis and balance

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about 16 years ago. I have difficulty walking due to no control of my balance and my right leg. I also have constant dizziness.Could physical therapy be beneficial?

Yes, physical therapy can help. Dizziness, balance loss, lack of coordination, weakness, and fatigue are all common symptoms for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Visual changes and changes in sensation, including the sensation of where you are located in space, can complicate the situation further and put the individual with MS at severe risk of falling.

Physical therapists are uniquely qualified to evaluate the cause of your dizziness and balance loss. Your physical therapist will also evaluate the strength and ability to control movement of your right leg and determine the relationship to your daily function and walking. An individualized plan of care will be developed to address your symptoms and the impact your daily activities. This plan may consist of vestibular rehabilitation, balance re-education, lower extremity alignment or bracing, and exercise.
